Founder Charles Wood

Charles Wood has received many awards for his efforts to bring a Japanese walking garden to Mobile. In 2013 Mr. Wood was the recipient of the Samuel Ullman Award. This award was presented by the Japan America Society of Alabama (JASA) and was first given in 1992 to those who have made significant contributions toward the advancement of the relationship between Japan and Alabama. The award was named in honor of Samuel Ullman who lived most of his life in Birmingham.

The Japanese Garden in Mobile seems to be skillfully designed to embody the elements of traditional Japanese gardens and I believe it will greatly contribute to broaden Japanese culture and traditional arts. As your Sister City, we are all delighted that such an authentic garden will be created in Mobile and we very much look forward to its completion.

History

We are an all-volunteer charity (Japanese Garden Foundation Inc 501c3, 63-1151148) charged to develop a community educational Japanese Garden to promote environmental tourism, arts & culture education within the community and city of Mobile, Alabama. Without an income or payroll, we obtain funding through donations, contributions, and grants to develop the Mobile Japanese Garden for the citizens, children, and visitors of Mobile. We promote and require volunteerism through the United Way of South West Alabama Volunteer Connect. Also in partnership with Mobile County Extension Office and Become a Master Gardener.
